Bishnoi races towards victory in Hisar

Haryana Janhit Congress' Kuldeep Singh Bishnoi appeared set for victory in the Hisar parliamentary by-election while the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) was number two and the state's ruling Congress was trailing a distant third.

Bishnoi was leading by more than 30,000 votes over his rivals, Ajay Singh Chautala of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Congress' three-time MP Jai Parkash.

As speculation mounted over the role played by Anna Hazare and team, which stepped into the political fray to campaign against the Congress, Bishnoi said he owed nothing to the anti-corruption crusader.

"I attribute it only to my father and the (alliance with) BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)," Bishnoi told reporters here, as officials placed him on the victory lap with a lead of 32,000 votes over his nearest rival.

By the time Team Anna began campaigning in Hisar against the Congress for its refusal to back the Jan Lokpal Bill, people had decided to vote for him, he said.

Bishnoi, son of former Haryana chief minister Bhajan Lal, however, added that he respected anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare and would vote for the Jan Lokpal Bill in parliament.

The Hisar seat had fallen vacant in June following the death of Bhajan Lal, a three-time chief minister.

Bishnoi races towards victory in Hisar                        As Bishnoi looked forward to victory, the son of another former chief minister was looking at second position in the crucial election result. Ajay Singh Chautala is the son of former Haryana chief minister, Om Prakash Chautala.

The Congress' Jai Parkash had come third in the last election as well. Although Bishnoi refused to give the Team Anna any credit, some analysts said the campaign had also affected the Congress prospects.

Surprisingly, Jai Parkash also denied that Team Anna had anything to do with the Hisar result. "The caste factor undid me," he said.

The election, held on Oct 13, witnessed 70 percent polling. About 9.3 lakh voters (nearly 70 percent) of 13.32 lakh registered voters had voted.

The Gilad Shalit Dilemma

The Gilad Shalit Dilemma

In Haifa eight years ago, Asaf Zur was returning home from school.  Along the way, his fellow bus passenger, a Hamas suicide bomber, blew himself up and killed seventeen Israelis, mostly school children like 17-year-old Asaf.

The  bomb belt worn by the terrorist was made by Mawaz Abu Sharach and Majdi Amro. They trained him, planned his deadly assault, and drove him to his target. For their heinous cruelty they received seventeen life sentences. Interviewed from an Israeli prison on British television for a program called “Inside the Mind of a Suicide Bomber,” he said: “We will be released before our sentences’ time; we will go back to terror because we must kill more Jews.

MLK Memorial

MLK Memorial
Thousands of people gathered Sunday to give the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial a proper dedication on the National Mall after its opening in August.

Aretha Franklin, poet Nikki Giovanni and President Barack Obama were among those who honored the legacy of the nation's foremost civil rights leader during a ceremony scheduled to run more than four hours.

The crowd, some of whom came out as early as 5 a.m., included people of all ages and races. Some women wore large Sunday hats for the occasion.

The president arrived late morning with his wife and two daughters, which drew loud cheers from those watching his entrance on large screens. He was to speak from a podium set up with part of the memorial as a backdrop.

Cherry Hawkins traveled from Houston with her cousins and arrived at 6 a.m. to be part of the dedication. They postponed earlier plans to attend the August dedication, which was postponed because of Hurricane Irene.

"I wanted to do this for my kids and grandkids," Hawkins said. She expects the memorial will be in their history books someday. "They can say, `Oh, my granny did that.'"

Hawkins, her cousin DeAndrea Cooper and Cooper's daughter Brittani Jones, 23, visited the King Memorial on Saturday after joining a march with the Rev. Al Sharpton to urge Congress to pass a jobs bill.

"You see his face in the memorial, and it's kind of an emotional moment," Cooper said. "It's beautiful. They did a wonderful job."

A stage for speakers and thousands of folding chairs were set up on a field near the memorial along with large TV screens. Most of the 10,000 chairs set out appeared to be full. Many other people were standing.

World Food Day on October 16, 2011.

World Food Day on October 16, 2011
Did you know – together we can work towards fixing the food system? Join people around the world in a week of action on food, this week – October 15-22, 2011 – Oxfam’s GROW week.  This week is an opportunity to celebrate food and the people who produce it. The GROW campaign is calling for changes to fix the injustices in our food system that leave almost a billion of us going to bed hungry every night – the majority women and girls. GROW week includes the 30th anniversary of World Food Day on October 16, 2011.

So, what can YOU do to be a part of GROW week?  You can start by taking the World Food Challenge.  Oxfam is simply calling on you to enjoy a meal during GROW week.  That’s it.  Share a meal made with organic, fair trade and/or local ingredients – it could be a small and intimate gathering of friends or family; or a larger event like a potluck at a community centre, school or workplace. Whatever works best for you.  The key is to get people talking. Use Oxfam’s Tools for Change to get the conversation started. Host a meal that sparks a conversation about where your food comes from, who cultivates it, and how we can make the global food system fairer and more sustainable.

A couple more things – tell Oxfam how you’ll meet the challenge. Your participation counts: Oxfam is pulling together a record of events from around the world.  Secondly, spread the word. Let others know how you will meet the challenge — through your networks and online through Facebook, Twitter or your blog — and challenge friends to do the same.  Watch the Oxfam website for news of activities and join in an exciting GROW week of action by taking the World Food Challenge.

Neil and I have been making an effort to eat as much local produce and meat as possible, helped along by our bi-weekly organic box and the tomatoes and peppers from our garden this year!

Along with some local eggs, our World Food Challenge meal was a simple breakfast omelette with sautéed tomatoes, peppers and mushrooms, served with fingerling potato fries.

Sometimes simple tastes best. Make it local and it’s even better!

So what are you waiting for? Get eating, get talking and join Oxfam’s GROW Week and take the World Food Challenge as well!

India's top women tennis star Sania Mirza said she is able to walk pain free after her left-knee surgery and is thankful that her injury came during the sport's off season.

Sania had torn her meniscus at the Flushing Meadows. She underwent the surgery last week and says that it will take her four-six weeks to recover.

"Because of the surgery I am able to walk pain-free. I will begin practicing once my rehabilitation is over. Doctors say it will take around five to six weeks to completely recover. My trainer from South Africa will also be coming shortly to work with me," said Sania, who was here at the DLTA complex Saturday as the chief guest of the Fenesta Tennis national championship.

"The injury came during the off-season, so that is a good thing."

The 24-year-old felt nostalgic being at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA) complex, where she had roughed it out as a junior player.

"I feel nostalgic. No matter which part of the county you play tennis, this is where you have to come and play. I have played quite a lot here and today I am being asked to hand out the prizes. I feel honoured," Sania said.

Sania was invited for India's first ever Formula One Grand Prix at the Buddh International circuit Oct 30 and the Hyderabadi said she is looking forward to be at the do.

"I am definitely looking forward to F1. I have not been to such an event before, it will be a great experience," she said.

Sania was also happy with her Pakistani cricketer husband Shoaib Malik's return to the national side.

"As a wife, I am definitely happy for Shoaib. The family has been supporting him and it is good to see him return," she said.

Yeddyurappa Shifted To Hospital

Yeddyurappa Shifted To Hospital
Former Karnataka chief minister B.S. Yeddyurappa was shifted to a hospital from jail early Sunday after he complained of chest pain within hours of being arrested in corruption cases.

"Yeddyurappa complained of chest pain and has been shifted to Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology," a Bangalore city police spokesperson said.

Doctors at the state government-run institute here declined to provide details of Yeddyurappa’s ailment and how long he will be kept in the hospital.

Lokayukta special court judge N.K. Sudhindra Rao Saturday sent Yeddyurappa to jail till Oct 22.

The former Karnataka chief minister will petition the high court Monday for bail, according to his lawyers.

Bangalore city Police Commissioner B.G. Jyothiprakash Mirji visited the institute early Sunday to review the security arrangements.

My Friend Pinto Movie

My Friend Pinto Movie
BollywoodWorld.com, “Zindagi khwab hai khwab mein sach hai kya aur bhala jhooth hai kya?” Remember Motilal’s staggering existentialism in 1956′s “Jagte Raho”? Some such philosophy underlines the key goings-on in “My Friend Pinto” — a wispy, nostalgic comedy about a Goan simpleton’s one night of zany adventures in the mad mad bustle of Mumbai during New Year’s eve.

This isn’t the first film that explores Mumbai by night. From Khwaja Ahmed Abbas’s “Bambai Raat Ki Bahon Mein” to Sudhir Mishra’s “Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin”, the dark comic side of the city’s underbelly has ceaselessly fascinated Bollywood since long before the term ‘Bollywood’ was invented.

Debutant director Raghav Dar switches on the innovative mode full-blast. The first and most conspicuous component in his comic romp is the director’s sense of fun.

He is fearless about the fun quotient that he has while going with one sumptuous swoop into lives as different from one another as any two homes, families that live in Mumbai can be.

A semi-retired gangster (Makarand Deshpande) and his never-been star-actress mistress(Divya Dutta), his twin assassin-goons Ajay and Vijay (played by real life Amin and Karim Hajee who were last seen together on screen dancing in a Sufi trance to A.R. Rahman’s devotional number in Jodhaa-Akbar), an old taxidriver and his gambler-son(theatre actor Shakeel Khan making a stellar screen appearance), a lost girl Maggie(Kalki Koechlin) abandoned by her small-time crook boyfriend on the railway station, the competitive couple (Arjun Mathur and Shruti Seth) coping with the sudden appearance of an unwanted guest from Goa, even as they try to cope with the fissures in their own marriage… These, then, are some of the characters who show up one night in Dar’s ‘Mumbai raat ki bahon mein’ (Mumbai at night).

There are many others. Oh yes, characters pop out of every nook and cranny like rabbits from a hat. Bringing them all together is the Goan Mama’s boy, the simpleton Michael Pinto who we’re informed, with tongue firmly in the scriprwriter’s cheek, is the nephew of Albert ‘jissko bahut gussa aata tha’ (who gets very angry).

The reference to Saeed Mirza’s 1980 cult classic “Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai” is not lost in the film’s melee of bustling adventures. The film is knowledgeably laden with references to cinema and cinematic devices from the past including a very pointed allusion to a corpse’s journey across Mumbai from Kundan Shah’s “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron”.

“My Friend Pinto” is a very complex script to write and an even more complex act to pull off on screen. Dar manages the chaos created by Michael Pinto’s misadventures across the celebratory streets of Mumbai with fluency and grace.

Black Hawk Down

Black Hawk Down
But one thing no one in the United States is talking about is repeating the country's actions 20 years ago, when the overthrow of Mohamed Siad Barre's 21-year military rule and the ensuing civil war prompted a similarly dire famine crisis in southern Somalia. U.S. troops were dispatched to smooth the way for aid delivery, and the effort to alleviate the famine is mostly remembered in the United States today for how it ended: a U.S. Black Hawk helicopter shot down with a rocket-propelled grenade over Mogadishu and the body of a U.S. Army soldier* aboard dragged through the city's streets.

As an advisor to the initial U.S. mission in Somalia, I remember the affair differently. "Black Hawk Down" may have been a disaster, but the U.S.-led relief effort that preceded this event was not; Operation Restore Hope, as it was called, saved tens if not hundreds of thousands of lives.

Many observers have drawn the wrong lesson from Somalia: that all interventions in anarchic places, no matter how well-intentioned, are riskier than they are worth. Today, faced with a new catastrophe in the Horn of Africa, we need to draw the better lesson. Another military intervention is not the answer, but by treating the famine as a political problem with potential solutions rather than a hopeless lost cause, the United States can help stop a tragic situation from becoming even more so.

Somalia had been deteriorating since the mid-1980s, but matters came to a head in January 1991, when a broad alliance of clan-based insurgents under the umbrella of the Somali National Alliance closed in on Mogadishu, finally forcing Siad Barre to flee the capital on Jan. 27. As the government collapsed, fighting broke out among clan factions -- led by rival generals Mohamed Farrah Aidid and Ali Mahdi Mohamed -- for local and regional control. Siad Barre's forces tried to fight their way back to the capital, and the battles that ensued forced virtually the entire civilian population to flee the "triangle of death" between Kismayo, Bardera, and Baidoa. The scorched-earth policy of the combatants destroyed the livelihoods of nomadic herders and sedentary farmers alike. More than half a million Somalis sought refuge in neighboring Kenya, and an equal number scattered farther from their homes. Many barely survived in camps on the outskirts of Mogadishu, where fighting broke out between the two warring factions for control of the port and airport.

Hilary Duff Pregnant

Hilary Duff Pregnant
Hilary Duff may be pregnant with her first child, but she isn’t letting a baby bump alter her sense of style! Hilary is still dressing in a young and hip manner, and was even spotted wearing tight black leather pants!

Hilary wore the leather pants and this cute red top for a book signing of her new book, “Devoted: An Elixir Novel.” Her baby bump was barely visible under the blouse, but then again, Hilary is only about four months along. She’s also only 24-years old, so pregnancy doesn’t seem to be taking as big of a toll on her body as it does on women who are older.

Duff recently revealed that she is expecting a baby boy, and she also disclosed how she broke the news of her pregnancy to husband Mike Comrie. She said, “He was taking a shower and I couldn’t wait and do anything cute, I was just like, ecstatic, and I ran in there and tapped on the shower glass, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God!’ holding up the test, and he’s like, ‘What?’ He comes out and he’s like, soaking wet, and gives me a big hug. It was really exciting.”

Actress Brenda Song

Actress Brenda Song
With rumors still floating around that Brenda Song and Trace Cyrus are expecting a child together, the pair confirmed today that they are getting married! Tweeted Miley's brother this afternoon:

"I am very excited to say, last week I asked my girlfriend Brenda Song to marry me and she said YES! We are both very excited to be engaged!!"

Chatter of a Song pregnancy first picked up in August, but the actress' mother came out a few weeks later and shot down the rumor. Still, Brenda herself has not issued a statement and is now engaged to the man who allegedly knocked her up.

Midnight Madness

Midnight Madness

hings were pretty normal for the opening night of practice for Division I men's basketball.

Most of Friday night's events were called some form of madness, from Big Blue to Mountaineer to First Night. Most of them ended well before the midnight part of many of their names.

There were also some coaches who let the fans know things were going to be serious this season.

Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun didn't promise a repeat of last season's national championship - the Huskies' third in a span of 13 years - but he didn't discourage any thoughts of it.

The Occupy Wall Street

The Occupy Wall Street

Via Dave Weigel, savor the irony of a spot that begins with a call for more serious political conversations and then instantly reverts to deathless leftist boilerplate about “economic justice” and “peace rather than militarization.” (Maybe Obama’s not the candidate for these people after all.) This is as close as we’ve gotten to an actual list of demands, and … we still ain’t close. But honestly, I don’t even want to see the demands anymore. All I want to see is the math. We’re going to hike taxes on the rich to pay for education? Great! Who are we going to hike taxes on to lift the $1.299 trillion deficit boulder that Hopenchange dropped on us this year? The rich, right? How about making Medicare sustainable long-term before it supernovas from the pressure of millions of new Baby Boomers piling onto the rolls? Any creative solutions, or is that another case of shaking the big money tree that you’ll find growing in every one-percenter’s backyard? The tragedy of this idiocy, of course, is that many of the 99 percent really are hurting terribly and yet the only way to pay for their “solutions” would be to tax … the 99 percent. The chump in the White House knows that perfectly well but he’s too gutless to break the bad news until after he’s safely re-elected or else the GOP would pull something close to 99 percent at the polls next year. That’s another grand White House fraud. Not the grandest, but it’s up there.

No worries, though. Cosmic justice is coming his way in the form of some sort of OWS national convention they’re trying to arrange for July 4, 2012 — just four months before election day. A sample plank from the proposed agenda:

    9. If the government fails to redress the petition of grievances and drastically change the path this country is on, the delegates will demand the resignation and recall of all members of congress, the president and even the Supreme Court and call for new elections by, of and for the PEOPLE with 99 days of the resignation demand.

I’m looking forward to those recall elections for the Supreme Court, but not as much as I’m looking forward to the look of perpetual constipation on O’s face as he’s forced to tack left to appease these people at a moment when he’ll be desperate — and I do mean desperate — to convince independents that he’s a true purple centrist at heart. New theory: Maybe OWS is a diabolical Mitt Romney plot?

Two vids here. One is the commercial, the other is … self-explanatory. Not necessarily representative of the movement, mind you, but after two and a half years of tea partiers being demagogued with the excesses of their worst members, we’ll be repaying the kindness for a long, long time to come. The second vid was shot today at the Occupy LA protests by Reason TV. You can watch that full video right here. Exit question: Which New York elected officials have taken to intimidating Zuccotti Park’s landlord on the protesters’ behalf?

RA.One’ Will Take Bollywood Movies

RA.One’ Will Take Bollywood Movies
BollywoodWorld.com, Superstar Shahrukh Khan says his forthcoming mega-budget “RA.One” has world-class technology and that the sci-fi thirller is the first film that shows a superhero living in a family.

“I have made a movie on which nobody can say that it is a second-rated technology. ‘RA.One’ will take Bollywood movies’ technology to the world. It is part of my legacy in Bollywood, which has given me so much,” said Shah Rukh.

“I want our cinema to be best in the world. The movie will leave a mark internationally,” he said. “I got inspired by a lot of superhero movies but I have made an original movie. In fact, ‘RA.One’ will be the first superhero-based movie in the world in which a superhero lives in a family. It is a family entertainer.”

Shah Rukh is currently busy promoting “RA.One”, which is releasing Oct 26, and travelling extensively to promote it. He was here Thursday for the same.

King Khan feels that the Indian film industry is well equipped to make technology-based movies.

“Everything is there in the industry but we were not making such films. We have the best theaters in the world, then why we could not make a technology based movie?” he asked.

“I talked to Resul Pookutty and he tells him that there would be several Hindi movies in which he would have given much better sound. But because of technology, he got an (Oscar) award.”

Talking about the making of the film, he said: “I used to take almost 50 minutes to wear the superhero uniform and two-and-a-half-hours to get ready completely. It took us almost eight hours to make the car scene, which is being shown in promos. I enjoyed doing all these but now I want to make romantic movies.”

When asked how much business the movie is expected to do and if it will do better than Salman Khan’s recent movies, Shah Rukh preferred not to comment.

The “RA.One” team launched a new trailer of the film in Bhopal. The trailer reveals the film’s villain, a character essayed by actor Arjun Rampal.

Shah Rukh also performed for the large audience that gathered outside the mall where the promotion took place.

Moon Rise Time

Moon Rise Time
Meteor activity in general increases in October when compared to September. A major shower (the Orionids) is active most of the month along with many minor showers. Both branches of the Taurids become more active as the month progresses, providing slow, graceful meteors to the nighttime scene. The Orionids are the big story of the month reaching maximum activity on the 22nd. This display can be seen equally well from both hemispheres which definitely helps out observers located in the sporadic-poor southern hemisphere this time of year.

During this period the moon reaches its last quarter phase on Thursday October 20th. At this time the moon will lie ninety degrees west of the sun and will rise near midnight local daylight time (LDT). This weekend the waning gibbous moon will rise during the early evening hours and will effectively ruin the late evening and early morning hours with intense moonlight. One could watch for meteors during the early evening hours between dusk and moonrise. Unfortunately at this time of night activity will be low. The estimated total hourly rates for evening observers this week is near two as seen from the northern hemisphere and one as seen from the southern hemisphere. For morning observers the estimated total hourly rates should be near eight as seen from mid-northern latitudes and six from mid-southern latitudes. The actual rates will also depend on factors such as personal light and motion perception, local weather conditions, alertness and experience in watching meteor activity. Rates are reduced during this period due to the intense moonlight.

The radiant (the area of the sky where meteors appear to shoot from) positions and rates listed below are exact for Saturday night/Sunday morning October 15/16. These positions do not change greatly day to day so the listed coordinates may be used during this entire period.

Detailed descriptions of each shower will continue when the moonlight situation improves. The following showers are expected to be active this week:

Rates and positions are exact for Saturday night/Sunday morning.

The list below presents a condensed version of the expected activity this week. Rates and positions are exact for Saturday night/Sunday morning.

Siri On iPhone 4

Siri On iPhone 4
As we mentioned in our earlier coverage, Siri was initially developed outside Apple at the SRI, and the original Siri app worked just fine on an iPhone 4, although it was never integrated the way it is in iOS 5. It is fair to say that the lack of Siri support on iPhone 4 is probably a way for Apple to differentiate the iPhone 4S from the iPhone 4.

Steven Troughton-Smith has been able to backport Siri from the iPhone 4S to the iPhone 4, and it means that iPhone 4 owners may be able to get Siri, at least for those who are willing to jailbreak (bypass Apple’s app install authorization) their phones.

So, does it work? It apparently does according to that movie and story from 9to5Mac, and the author even says that if it appears sluggish, it’s because there is a missing driver. Until then, we won’t know for sure how fast Siri really is on the iPhone 4. Obviously, the iPhone 4S has more muscles, there’s no question about it, but it would have been really nice if iPhone 4 users had access to Siri. Now, will Apple block it at the server level? Let’s wait and see!

Thurston Moore And Kim Gordon

Thurston Moore And Kim Gordon
First R.E.M. splits up, and now Sonic Youth may be over: After 27 years of marriage and 30 years as bandmates, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon today issued a statement announcing they’ve separated, and while Sonic Youth will honor its South American touring commitments next month, the future of the band is uncertain.

According to Spin, the pair confirmed the split via a statement released by Matador Records:

“Musicians Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore, married in 1984, are announcing they have separated. Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment.”

The band — which also features guitarist Lee Ranaldo, drummer Steve Shelley and recent addition Mark Ibold, formerly of Pavement, on bass — is scheduled to perform five dates in Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, Chile and Brazil in November. Should Sonic Youth not survive the couple’s break-up, the band’s final show could be Nov. 14 in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
